The umbrella suspends painted images of dancers, protecting them from the grey skies above and around. Each mirror sewn to each canvas displays a literary quote, either from a book I love, or a quote that I found that I enjoy. The text has faded with time, as memory does, providing a murmur of recollection. Having lived in Eastern Washington the last 12 years, and having travelled extensively through the Northwest and high plains, I have developed a great love for the open spaces and nearly empty expanses of the Western United States. There is a stereotype of the west as a land peopled by solitary individuals, and that is represented by the black crows featured on each panel of the screens. I, of course, reassured him continually that that could never happen, but as a father I could not help but ingest some of that fear, and consider the terrible possibility ever coming to pass, and this piece is about that fear. The empty chairs centered in each canvas represents a missing child, and the light partially hidden behind each canvas symbolizes a life obscured by loss. The Flambeaux carriers were originally African American slaves or free men of color, and the tradition began over 150 years ago. The crowds toss coins to the flambeaux carriers - it was a way for them to earn money for their task of lighting the way for the floats, and is a tradition that dates back to when the only compensation for the task was thrown by the crowds in appreciation. Today, 75 percent of the carriers have previous ancestors who were carriers, and they continue the tradition. The portraits painted on each lantern are superimposed by childhood memories, and the back-lighting is intended to give life the words. The gears stitched across the words are representative of the inner workings of thought, feeling and memory. My intention with this piece is to capture something of the essence of the city, where courtyards of hidden gardens lie behind plain pine doors, and the tombs all lie above ground in ornate and derelict cities of the graveyards. There is also a spiritual aspect which is unique to the city, and can be at once mysterious and intrinsic. There is a ghost of civilization that runs through the phone lines in the west, a web that connects the little cities, tiny towns and solitary farmhouses. Having lived in Eastern Washington the last 13 years, and having travelled extensively through the Northwest and high plains, I have developed a great love for the open spaces and nearly empty expanses of the Western United States. To this extent, the various portraits of people are superimposed by the stars, and each individual is bolted to the overall frame of the flag. Copper wire is stretched in front and between the portraits, representative of the stripes on the American flag, but also hinting at the loss of individuality inherent in the binding of a nation. I’ve been wanting to do a piece about Belize, and to pay homage to the wonderful local art and traditions of the region, so developed this piece as an homage to the country and a remembrance of the storm. I wanted to create an image representing the Scottish Highlands, known for it’s wild, barren hills, as well as it’s wild, slightly barbarous past. It’s a big land, so I wanted a big cow, and so the image is life-size. The colors in the background are reminiscent of the heather and wild grasses that cover the landscape. David was sort of a hero of mine, in an art history nerdy sort of way, as he came to prominence at the end of the French Monarchy and then remained artistically in the center of French life through the French Revolution and the reign of Napoleon. As homelessness and addiction continue to perpetually plague American society, the safety net that we build is constantly being stretched thin, torn apart, or discarded completely, especially in today’s political climate. It feels, at times, the solutions to real and serious problem are little more than panaceas and worry dolls. I wanted to depict this state of affairs in the piece, but also to show that at heart, within, there is joy to be found and nurtured. The chaos of the storm and the following debris were offset by the absolute darkness and complete calm the following day. I tried to capture these two disparate senses in the piece, while also echoing the darkened windows with the candles for light and tree branches strewn in front. The treatment of the painted surface is intended to reference stained glass, an acknowledgment of the religious as well as secular nature of the conflict in Northern Ireland. Hanging in front of the central canvas are images of peace - angels holding wreaths - with quotes from James Joyce superimposed in front. The life size alligator lies before a canvas gridded with black thread and stars, meant to symbolize the net of order thrown across an untamed wilderness by modern civilization. String dolls, often associated with voodoo rituals, are stitched to the canvas over small lizards, and a typical bayou house lies in the middle, circled by the alligator. The central image of the iconic plains bison is intended to be symbolic of the destruction of native species and non-European people in American history. The men depicted on the suspended canvasses are the Elaine 12, twelve black men who were arrested, tried and executed after the Elaine race riot in Arkansas in 1918, in which up to 600 black men were killed. People of color were not allowed to serve on juries in Elaine at that time, although blacks outnumbered whites in this area of Arkansas by a ten to one ratio. Against this backdrop, the piece is also about those who move upstream, away from the crowds. The central image is of schoolchildren in the slums of Glasgow in the 1930s, posing for their school photo. The four smaller canvasses, suspended in front of the main canvas by iron schoolhouse coat hooks, depict an image of a traditional gas lamp lighter from the time, superimposed over quotes from poems by Robert Burns, Scotland’s most famous and treasured poet. The children in the slums of Glasgow lived in abject poverty, some of the poorest neighborhoods in Europe at the time. The six suspended canvasses depicting various moths features fragments from Hawthorn’s epic poem “Evangeline”, about the migration of the Acadians to Louisiana. As a parent of two kids, I know that glass beads, toy alligators, or worry dolls can all be employed to make a child feel better. The bomber image on the small canvasses is offset by the small dove, a variation of the carrot and the stick, representing the conflicting impulses that are key to restoring order from conflict. This is, of course, a major issue in American society right now, one fraught with emotion, division and acrimony. I wanted to frame the issue in a more positive light, so chose to create 35 portraits of immigrants to this country from around the world. I chose those people most in need of the American dream, coming from countries too poor or torn by war to support them. All of the portraits are looking left, back to where they came, but when all of the paintings come together, a common image binds them together into a cohesive whole. I chose the image of Abraham Lincoln to be the common thread between them, because I believe that few people in American history have believed as strongly as Lincoln that the need for human dignity must be at the root of this country. A free and diverse population is what makes America unique in the world, and lies at the strength of our country. My daughter, who is 11, would gladly have attended that concert, and the thought of any harm coming to her breaks my heart. The bee imagery references the city of Manchester, which is known in England as the Bee City, and the bee became the symbol, across the city, of hope and defiance in the face of terror. The guitar on the t-shirt represents Manchesters’ reputation as a center of music in England, and the shirt itself is one of my son’s, which has always been one of my favorites and which he has outgrown. The central image is of the Notting Hill riots that took place in London in 1977, inspiring the song by the Clash, as well as their name, and is representative of the economic and racial discord of the UK that gave rise to the anger of the early punk movement in Great Britain. It seems to me that, unlike now, we always knew who the enemy was supposed to be, and that they would most likely never actually send any nuclear weapons our way. The Cold war may not have been a particularly fun time in our history, but there is now a certain romanticism associated with the espionage and spy games. While developing Cold War Romance, and thinking of imagery from that time, I wanted to stay away from missiles, bomb shelters, and all of the usual trappings of the cold war. While developing the ideas it occurred to me that nobody really wants to see a piece of artwork about house flies, so decided to scrap the idea. Still, the great New Orleans Mardi Gras song “Shoo Fly” kept throbbing in my head, and I decided that I needed to change tacks, keep the flies, but focus on the song. Each portrait is constructed of 25 canvasses hung together, each canvas displaying varying layers of color. We are defined by these collections of layers, and also by the small items that we identify as meaningful to ourselves. Each canvas has a small charm stitched to it, representative of these things that we gather and hold close, little markers of what we care about and who we are. For “Identity no. 1” I chose a lighter color palate for the final overlay of color, offsetting the darker underpainted squares below. I also chose unexpected charms to define the woman depicted by the piece, exemplifying that who we are is not defined by what people expect of us. “Identity no. 2” features an image of a man, painted in a warmer and darker color scheme than the woman in the companion piece. I felt that it was so successful, and I enjoyed the concept so much, that it developed into a fully formed piece of it’s own. It is a study about people who go their own way. I have previously exhibited the works as an alternation between the two themes, but each piece works as a unique piece of artwork as well, independent from the body of work as a whole. Secret is about finding private moments in a crowd, a sense of peace on the public stage, whether alone or in private conversation. Strife can take on the overt form of people in conflict, but also the more subtle form of a crowd displaying ill intent, or of a child crying, neglected by the people around her. The island is awash with wild pigs, running free in the mountains, and often served in the dining rooms. When on Kauai I will happily eat Kalua pork every single day that I am there, for all three meals if possible, much to the chagrin of my family. I continued the circle motif in this piece, and created a double layer with the coils and the hibiscus imagery. The small canvasses for the blustery palm trees are attached to the piece with blocks that raise them about two inches from the main canvas. To this end I suspended the strings go beads, along with small charms of images from the circus. The girls in this painting would work 6 days a week, 12 hour shifts, at an oyster factory on the English coast. There were no educational opportunities for these children. The early 20th century was sort of the golden age for the circus, and the trapeze artists really exemplified the bravery and glamour of those early performers. I chose to attach the rusted tin stars to lend the piece a bit of history and nostalgia. This is my homage to these great community events - the small neighborhood parades of memory, the big holiday parades of tradition, and the jazz funeral parades in New Orleans. Several years ago I attended my first Mardi Gras in New Orleans. As much as I completely fell in love with the spectacle of the big parades, I was even more taken with the smaller neighborhood parades which bring everybody together and delight all New Orleanians, from all parts of the city. The first of these pieces is Teenage Sharecroppers. This work depicts two boys who worked as subsistence farmers at the turn of the 20th century to support their families. Child labor was more common at that time, particularly away from the cities in poor, rural places. The unemployment rate in the American south during the Depression was often as high as 30%, but for men of color the rate could be twice or three times as high. For this painting I wanted to open up my color palate quite a bit, and focus on creating an image within a patchwork of squares and circles. Small silver charms are sewn in the center of each circle, to give focus to the circular part of the motif. This piece was created for my wife - I wanted to create a big five foot pineapple just for her. I decided to tackle the circle motif as a purely abstract pattern, which covers all of the primary canvas, with a cowre shells sewn onto each circle, except for the four lizards, which can be seen through the cutouts on the four surfer girl canvasses. I employed these circles on all of the Kauai Impression canvasses as a reference to the nature of island life - the island is a uniquely contained unit, supplying all that is needed for life within it’s shores.
